Buy unlock Palm Pre for Verizon?

Ok I’m due for a new phone and I’m tired playing nice with Verizon. I want to get the Pre because the future of Iphone coming to Verizon is a long shot away. I also have a very certain idea that Verizon will lock everything away like they did with the HTC touch. So I am wondering is it worth it to buy the Pre now for full price and enjoy it? I just want a good CDMA phone that can have Facebook/Myspace Youtube.

I don’t think CDMA phones can be unlocked to work on other networks. They are locked to their respective carriers and work differently than GSM, SIM card compatible phones. Only GSM (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.) phones can be unlocked to work on other networks and even then, all features might not be available (different GSM networks use different bandwidths for 3G service, for example).

There should be a GSM version of the Pre coming out within the next 6 to 9 months (once Sprint’s 6 month exclusivity contract expires). The heads of AT&T and Palm have both indicated that this will be the case.

So, if you really want a Pre, your best bet is to either switch to Sprint now or wait for the GSM version and switch to a GSM carrier to use it on. (And forget the iPhone, the call quality ***** and you will be able to do better…especially since so many great new phones and quality operating systems are being released now. The other companies are really ramping up the competition and iPhone/Apple will shoot itself in the foot with their non-replaceable batteries/no expandable memory/crappy cameras/etc.)

Otherwise, there are lots of other nice phones out there that you might try. I’ve been researching them myself lately because I need a new phone as well. CNET.com has some amazing reviews on cell phones and you can search them by your preferred carrier.

CDMA, Facebook, Myspace, and Youtube for Palm Pre? You’ve got the right smartphone in mind. The Facebook and Myspace apps are already a part of the Palm Pre that work much better than using a browser for a mobile phone. It’s easy and painless to navigate across all the options.

The built-in YouTube app is also cool. It fills your screen and will orient the video sideways. Itls definitely better than surfing youtube through a browser.

The best part is that you can open youtube_ myspace_ facebook_ and other apps all at the same time. Then switch back to any app at any time. The multitasking OS for the Palm Pre is way too cool.

Buy now and enjoy as it already appears to meet all the requirements you’ve mentioned and more.
